Enchanted
Starring… YOU!

enchanted princessAll of us at Up With Kids in Utah are excited to welcome our accomplished past performers and our talented new students to our 23rd year’s production of “Enchanted, starring… YOU!” Join us on this thrilling journey from the Fantasy Kingdom of Andalasia to that terrible place where there are No Happy Endings… exhilarating New York City!

Inspiring Curriculum

All of our returning friends know this, but we’d like to reassure everyone who’s joining us for the first time that the Utah Up With Kids children’s theatre award winning curriculum is always “G-Rated” and family friendly. The activities in which we learn about singing, dancing and acting are age-appropriate, uplifting and inspiring. We celebrate family values! We strive to bring out the best in ourselves and in our students in every aspect of our program!

Acting

This year’s fantasy world extravaganza will include great characters! You’ll practice your acting skills in fun drama games every week and then show them off in our popular performances in May! As always, every Up With Kids! student will be cast as a unique named character with speaking lines and will participate in spectacular songs and dances in our show! You might take the stage as a Fairy Tale Prince or Princess- Sleeping Beauty, Prince Phillip, Jasmine, Aladdin, Ariel, Eric, Belle, the Beast, Ella, Prince Dauntless… any one of many more royal favorites. Or you might play a humorously wicked monster character, such as a Troll, Shrek, Wall-E, Eve, Jack Skellington, Sally Zombie, Edward Cullen, Jacob Black, Oogie Boogie, Oscar the Grouch or the Cookie Monster, even the Abominable Snowman! When Giselle fights the Dragon Queen, it gets a little scary. But just wait until Pip runs into Alvin and the Chipmunks, Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, Chicken Little, Abby Duckling, Bambi, Thumper and Flower in the forest! Or Alex the Lion, Gloria the Hippo, Melman the Giraffe, the Penguins, Baloo, Bagheera, Po, Tigress, Shifu, Horton and Maisey Bird at the Central Park Zoo! We’ll have an entire skyscraper full of the nastiest but funniest villains ever to pillage a subway in search of adventure! And busloads full of the most adorable and colorful, small and heroic pigeons, mice and cockroaches ever to foil a nasty plot!

Singing

This is going to be the most musical year ever, with a “That’s How You Know” Caribbean drum concert in the park and “Andalasia Idol” fun! We will continue with our “learn to sight read music” activity in our weekly vocal development lessons. And you are going to LOVE the songs we’ll be singing! There will be some of our favorites from the movies, like “Happy Working Song,” and “True Love’s Kiss.” We’ll be playing Boomwhackers as we dance to a fantastic scary number- “The Monster Mash.” Our tiniest students will once again steal the show as they sing “A Bad Day” with chipmunk voices. And all of the Princes and Princesses will join in as Prince Edward pleads for “Somebody To Love.”

Dancing

You will continue to develop your dance techniques this year! We’ll begin the show in the classic fairy tale kingdom of Andalasia with you twirling along with Prince Edward and his royal guests. Classic ballet moves will highlight your performance of “True Love’s Kiss.” When Giselle arrives, you’ll explore creative movement to demonstrate the hustle and bustle of New York City. Imagine your excitement and amusement as you tap dance with the pigeons, cockroaches and mice. You’ll high step through Central Park in a dazzling extravaganza of Caribbean drummers, hula hooping clowns, old couples and brides, skater dudes and evil concessionaires belting out “That’s How You Know.” You’ll have a blast hip hopping with Alvin and the Chipmunks and be swept off your feet in a Medieval Circle Dance at the King’s and Queen’s Ball!

Cultural Learning Experiences

As always, we will be including fabulous cultural learning experiences in our year’s phenomenal curriculum. We’ll learn about The Brothers Grimm who wrote so many of our favorite fairy tales. It’s going to be fun to get better acquainted with Walt Disney’s life in connection with this celebration of his greatest achievements. Our students will analyze the artistic style of Maurice Sendak in his endearing drawings of “The Wild Things.” And by popular demand we are including even more fun movement activities with classical music: Khachaturian’s “Sabre Dance” (the scrubbing bubbles music) will accompany Prince Edward chasing the Trolls. Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” sets the mood for Giselle’s struggle through the crowds and traffic of New York City. And John Williams’ sparkling “Star Wars” music highlights our heroine’s battle with the wicked Dragon Queen!

Encore

Our encore number, “Ever Ever After,” will feature our entire cast performing our traditional sign language. This powerful musical number will underline the theme of our show: “Be Glad To Be You and Your Dreams Will Come True.” Some people dream of wealth or power. But in our performing arts journey this year, we will discover the true treasures of life- friends, family, nature, talents, knowledge, kindness, freedom, laughter and love. So jump into our wishing well of fun learning adventures and pop out of the manhole cover to STAR in this enchanting tale with a twist! Welcome to another great ALL-STAR production! UP WITH KIDS!
